Boss Witch Productions is a Los Angeles nonprofit arts organization dedicated to creating, producing, and supporting work at the intersection of experimental sound art, ritual performance, video art, and transmedia collaboration within natural landscapes and unusual performance sites.
We build sustainable, artist-driven infrastructure for ambitious, site-specific work, bringing together people, practices, and communities that might otherwise never meet.

BORN AT THE END
OF THE WORLD
Founded in 2020 by Mads Falcone, Madison Heying, and Carmina Escobar, Boss Witch emerged during the pandemic, when apocalypse felt less like a metaphor than an everyday condition. Amid isolation and uncertainty, we began asking how artists could support one another, what collective creation could make possible, and how to keep making work with care, pleasure, and a future in mind.
Our name draws on the witch as a figure of knowledge, agency, and resistance to the status quo. Rooted in lived experiences of queerness, gender nonconformity, migration, and multicultural heritage, Boss Witch makes space for practices that challenge inherited boundaries and imagine other ways of being together. Today, the organization is led by Carmina Escobar, its current director.

HOW WE
WORK
Our work grows through deep engagement with place, community, history, collaboration, craft, and imagination, including the friction between them. We approach nature as something we belong to, working with its conditions rather than trying to control them. We seek to reimagine our relationships with the world around us while leaving a minimal human footprint.
That means attending to fragile ecosystems, local knowledge, and the complex histories of land and its inhabitants. We work toward reciprocal relationships with artists, communities, and partner organizations, guided by the principle of giving more than we take.
We center creatives from diasporic and other underrepresented communities, with queer and gender-expansive perspectives integral to our work. Our commitment to diversity reaches across artistic leadership, performers, production crews, technicians, collaborators, audiences, and organizational governance. We bring different generations, disciplines, cultural histories, and forms of knowledge into conversation, making room for both their differences and their shared possibilities.

WHAT WE HAVE
MADE POSSIBLE
One of our foundational productions, Carmina Escobar’s Bajo la Sombra del Sol / Under the Sun’s Shadow, established the scale and ambition of this approach. Developed and filmed in the landscape of Mono Lake, the work brought together voice, movement, sculptural instruments, ritual, and film. Its November 2021 world premiere at REDCAT transformed the theater into an immersive environment of live performance and multiscreen imagery, carrying an expansive collective mythology from the landscape into the performance space.
Together, our founding projects, Bajo la Sombra del Sol and Vox Clamantis, supported a creative and production team of 34 artists, including 65 percent artists of color and 60 percent artists of underrepresented genders.

COLLABORATIONS
Our collaborations and programs have included Ron Athey, Dorian Wood, Carole Kim, Jerónimo Naranjo, Asher Hartman, Oguri, Roxanne Steinberg, Laura Steenberge, ISAURA String Quartet, Jaime Scholnick, Maqueos Music, Baseck, Una Isu, M.A. Harms, Mirrored Fatality, and Catherine Herrera, among many others.
From AL SUR DE LA FRONTERA to our commissions and fellowships, these projects connect experimental practices with distinct cultural traditions and communities. Our work continues internationally through creative production for Ron Athey’s ASCLEPEION, in collaboration with Future Ritual.

COMMISSIONS &
MOONBLOOD
Our commissions combine artist fees and material support with production, documentation, and mentorship, helping artists develop work with sustained attention and practical resources.
The MOONBLOOD Fellowship connects established artists with artist fellows who provide logistical and administrative support while cultivating exchange across generations and practices. Across our programs, we support emerging, mid-career, and established artists, sharing resources and building relationships that can continue beyond a single presentation.

WHAT COMES NEXT
We value the fleeting, embodied nature of performance and the importance of preserving its traces. Film, video, sound recordings, and archives allow the work to circulate, reach new audiences, and become a resource for future creation.
We are also developing Boss Witch Productions Editions, a publishing initiative with several print series: Spells & Counterspells, exploring communal practices, creative knowledge, and critical responses to queer and diasporic experience; Sacred Tongues of Fire, bringing poetry into dialogue with music and sound; and Grimoire of Devotion, dedicated to essays, archives, and documentation of visionary work.
These editions extend our commitment to artists into another form: publications that can be held, shared, returned to, and carried elsewhere.

Based in Los Angeles, Boss Witch Productions is an artistic production company working at the intersection of experimental sound art, ritual performance, video art, and transmedia collaboration—often situated within natural landscapes and unusual performance sites. We center creatives from diasporic and other underrepresented communities, producing and supporting innovative works rooted in deep engagement with place, community, history, collaboration, craft, imagination, and the liminal spaces generated through their friction. While we believe in the power of ephemeral performances, we are equally committed to preserving and archiving embodied repertoires via our film and video work, sound recordings, and emerging publishing initiatives.
Founded in 2020 by Carmina Escobar, Mads Falcone, and Madison Heying to establish a sustainable, artist-driven infrastructure for the creation of experimental, site-specific work. We seek to reimagine our relationship to the world around us creating immersive innovative exhibitions, performances, and sound art related to land and ritual while leaving a minimal human footprint.
Boss Witch launched in 2020 with two projects related to the sacred natural, ritual, and the subversion of social constructs: Under the Sun's Shadow (Bajo la Sombra Del Sol) and Vox Clamantis. These works supported a creative and production team of 34 artists, including 65% artists of color, and 60% artists of underrepresented genders.
2022–2023 includes the completion of Vox Clamantis, as well as the launch of the Boss Witch MOONBLOOD Summer Fellowship, and our first commission with composer and performer M.A. Harms.
